Today (Friday), the Iranian Revolutionary Guards unveiled an underground missile base off the Gulf coast, amid severe tensions with the United States. The country's state media quoted General Hossein Salami, Iran's most powerful military commander, as saying that the base is one of several strategic naval missile bases.

Last year, the Revolutionary Guards said Iran had built underground "missile cities" along the Gulf coast, warning of "a nightmare for Iran's enemies." "These missiles have a range of hundreds of kilometers, are accurate, have enormous destructive power and can defeat the enemy's electronic combat equipment," Salami said. The exact location of the base was not revealed.

In recent years, there have been several clashes in the Gulf between the Revolutionary Guards and the US Army, who accused the force's fleet of sending fast attack boats with the aim of harassing American warships as they passed through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said today that Tehran is not under pressure for the United States to return to the nuclear deal from which outgoing President Donald Trump withdrew, but said that sanctions should be lifted immediately. Trump imposed the sanctions after unilaterally withdrawing from the accord Iran signed with the great powers in 2015. His successor, Joe Biden, is interested in returning to the nuclear deal and opening negotiations on other issues.
