A recent study by Swedish researchers revealed that there are no negative effects of sleeping again for a few additional minutes after waking up, and said that this behavior has several advantages.

Researchers from Stockholm University noted that there is “little” research on waking up in the morning, which prompted them to conduct their study, which included 1,732 participants, and focused on the characteristics of personalities who resort to postponing waking up by pressing the “snooze” button, which is the function designated to repeat the ringtone. “We found that young people are generally users of the snooze feature, and we found that they tend to stay up longer at night,” said Tina Sandlin, a sleep researcher at Stockholm University.

In another part of the study, the researchers focused on the effect of returning to sleep in the morning, through tests that 31 people underwent in different situations: continuing to sleep, waking up immediately, or waking up for the first time half an hour before the final actual awakening.

“What was interesting was that those who used the snooze button slept only 6 minutes less than others on average,” Sandlin noted, explaining that they fell back into deeper sleep during the half hour before waking up.

Those included in the study were given cognitive tests in areas such as mathematics, or a memory test. Those who woke up and then went back to sleep for an additional period of time did not record any real difference from others in terms of feeling tired in the tests.

The researcher noted that they "even obtained better results in some tests," concluding that "the clearer effect of returning to sleep in the morning is not negative."
